A Note from your President, Steve Hart
August 2008
General Membership Meeting, 8/19/08
Man, I hope you were able to make it to the last meeting. We presented our first program using the equipment (sawing and dopping cabochons), which is steadily coming on line. We had a great turnout (over 50 members and guests showed up) and got to meet the final president of the old Oroville rock club, Mr. Elmo Lackey. The old club disbanded in the late 1980s.
There’s only 4 1/2 months left to become a charter member of the Club…once January 1st, 2009 hits, the Charter Membership program will disappear forever!
Our members also voted to keep the same meeting date (3rd Tuesday of each month) and start time (6:30 PM). There was lots of discussion regarding our last Field Trip to the Wall at DeSabla. Seems like everyone who participates is getting to know one another. That’s one of the best things about an active club like ours. You get out of it exactly what you put into it!
The next meeting will be held on September 16th…I promise we’ll have a few more chairs--hope you can make it!
New Website now Operational
With the able assistance of our resident “computer genius”, Becky Rogers, our Club website is now on line and “live” at www.orovillerocks.com . You probably know that because you’re reading these Notes on the website! Take some time to familiarize yourself with the many features of the site, and if you see anything missing, please contact us.
Be sure and look at the calendar, where you will find our complete schedule of activities, as well as all the gem shows going on around us. You can learn an awful lot at these shows. Attend a few and see. The calendar holds a lot of details about Camp Paradise also…check it out, and if you want to come to Week #2, call me right away (589-3899)--(it’s too late to call CFMS).
Next Field Trip, 9/20/08
We had to change the location of this trip, but keep checking our calendar and we’ll post the new location soon.
What I See
From my viewpoint, our little Club is growing rapidly. A small group is running pretty hard to bring the rest of the members a high quality product. I worry that some are burning out already. The truth is, we need more help. The original plan was to have our members share the work by volunteering where they could. Some of you have shown up once, had a great time, then never came back. Some have not shown up to help at all. Only one person showed up last night to help Manuel work in the Shop.
So consider this another plea for your assistance. If we can spread the load to enough people, the load won’t be too heavy for anyone. We still need people in the following positions: Federation Director, Shop Foreman, Program Chairman, Scholarship Chairman, Librarian, and Historian. Boy would I like to have a Federation Director!
If you would like to call me and see if your skills or time availability is sufficient to take on a job, I would love to talk to you.
Thanks for strongly considering my request to help broaden the load.
