Current Information

February 2010

Our General Meeting this month will be very enlightening as our Speaker is  Fred Ott, President of the California Federation of Mineralogical Societies.  Fred will be sharing the joys and trials of a start up rock club, what works and where the pitfalls are and methods to increase membership, activities and areas for service to the club.  Connie will advise her newspaper contact to see if this event can be advertised and open to general public as a means to attract new members.

Due to a scheduling conflict our General Meeting will be on February 23, 2010 at 6:30 p.m.  This will be an Italian potluck meeting so get creative in the kitchen and bring a dish to brag about and share.

Your Board has actively been searching for a building to use for our meetings and the shop. We will update everyone on February 23rd.  Board Members have met with the city and county about available buildings and we have called on several vacant buildings in the area.

We have a slightly new look in our meeting area as Charlee Ann and Darla went to the County Surplus Sale and were able to buy an 8ft table, 6ft table, 6 stacking chairs, and 6 upholstered office chairs for the grand total of $31.00.  We have also purchased an office quality printer (built to make 15,000 a month) copier, scanner and fax machine on sale from Staples for $159.00. and a case of 5000 sheets of copy paper for $21.00.  The copier prints double sided, and produces 38 copies a minute for black and color copies.  Black copies will cost us 1.2 cents a copy and color copies are 4 cents a copy.  This purchase has added a valuable asset to the club and has cut our printing costs for the Gem Show to less than half of what we paid last year for our printing needs.  The HP machine is at the meeting place and available to any member to use for club business.

Our treasurer Belinda Stevens is a student at Chico State and she is in the process of meeting with the department head of Geology to ask to supply student teachers to lead field trips for youth.  This type of activity would be advertised in the newspaper inviting the public and would be sponsored by our club.

We will be taking our first bi-monthly jewelry design field trip on March 3, 2010 to view the Tutankhamun exhibit.  There are still a couple of open slots for this trip so join us.  The next jewelry design field trip is in the planning stage.

A large Propane Heater has been supplied and installed on Feb 11th  by Connie and Mike Rossetto so the shop in Cherokee can be used during the cold months.

If you have ideas that you would like to see happen in our club we invite you to share your ideas with us.

Respectfully submitted,
Charlee Ann Lewis
